VOIP - Cheaper calls and phone system flexibility
What
is VOIP
VOIP stands for Voice Over
Internet Protocol (short for TCP/IP
- which is the method the internet uses to move data around). Put simply,
it's a new type of telephone system that uses the Internet as a method
of connecting telephones together. VOIP itself has been
around for a number of years, in fact Megatron started playing with it
back 1995, but only now has the lower cost and the number of installations
reached a critical mass that the technology is now really starting to
take off.
A VOIP telephone system is completely different
to the standard PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)
but they can still call / talk to one another via the inter-connection
through an ITSP (Internet Telephone Service Provider)
. This ITSP is the company that will supply you with a normal style phone
number DID (Direct In Dial) that switches/interconnects
the calls between the Internet and the PSTN phone system. These ITSPs
have specialised equipment with large connections to both telephone companies
such as Telstra, Optus, AAP etc and the Internet.
The
Benefits - economical phone calls
Savings of well over 50% on local calls and 75% on international
calls. Most ITSPs only charge 10c for un-timed calls to all capital cities
and to most regional area's, and around 6c per minute for most international
calls (which varies from country to country). Company inter-branch calls
whether inter-suburb or interstate calls are TOTALLY FREE
(as long as on the same VOIP system).
| |
e.g.
USA is approx. 0.06c per minute , that's only $3.60
for a call to the USA for an hour |
| |
|
| |
We
strongly believe that in the future, the MAJORITY of fixed line phone
calls will become completely FREE using VOIP technology as
the VOIP phone systems have the ability to call one another
directly, even bypassing the ITSP. |
The
Benefits - flexibility
As well as cheaper phone calls you have the power and flexibility of the
most sophisticated current PABX systems on the market at a fraction of
the cost.
| |
e.g.
Automatically directing calls to the correct department
via DTMF ( e.g. Press 1 for Sales, 2 for accounts, 3 for Service,
etc etc.
e.g.
Interfacing your application software with your phone system
for automatic dialing for outgoing calls, and for incoming calls
have you clients information automatically be displayed. |
Call
routing and forwarding
| |
e.g.
You could have a local Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, etc
.. phone numbers that are all routed back to a central office in say
Sydney. This gives you a National Presents without the costs of offices
in each state. all the incoming calls are answer in Sydney at the
same cost. |
Equipment,
Cost and Setup: There are some very cheap solutions, where
you can simply turn your PC into a VOIP telephone with some free software
(Xten Softphone) using a microphone and headset, but these solutions are
a compromise and not a fault tolerant business solution, simply, if you
PC crashes you lose your phone.
Megatron
recommends a dedicatedVOIP box (call a IP PBX), a standalone
Ethernet VOIP phone(s), and very importantly, a managed broadband connection
to the Internet.
